The Great Backyard Bird Count was started by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Participants of all ages and experience levels are asked to simply watch birds for 15 minutes or more, at least once during the weekend, and share their findings with Cornell. Supported by the National Audubon Society, this event provides a global snapshot of bird populations that allows scientists to follow migration trends and the population status of a variety of species. This information contributes to the conservation of thousands of bird species. In 2020, 268,674 participants identified 27,270,156 birds representing 6,942 species in 194 countries.
Participants can submit their sightings online at www.birdcount.org, or on their smartphones by using either the Merlin Bird ID app or the eBird Mobile app available for free in the major app stores.
Join us for our online interactive program on February 13th at 10:30 am. We’ll be answering questions, highlighting common native species, and teaching viewers how to download the apps as well as submit their sightings during this global citizen science project. By the way, the zoo is a great place to see birds!
