Climate Overview

As a state, Kansas features lots of “big sky” and open spaces with stunning, dramatic sunsets. Temperatures and precipitation vary, and the state experiences all four seasons.

From snow and rain to wind, Kansas undergoes seasonal changes that cause temperatures to fluctuate depending on the time of year. The summers are generally warm in this region with mild winters and moderate humidity.

The coldest month is January when temperatures typically reach an average of 31 degrees. Our warmest month is usually July when temps can climb to around 81 degrees, on average. However, hotter summers and colder winters are also not uncommon.

One great thing about Kansas is that you can find something to see and do at any time of the year. Whether you want to catch a beautiful sunset or go on an outdoor adventure, there’s no shortage of things to try and explore.

If you love to camp, Kansas has several campgrounds and cabins to visit as well as bed and breakfasts and high-end hotels. Just make sure you check the weather conditions in advance if you plan to camp so you have a pleasant experience.

If you’re visiting Garden City, bring a light jacket just in case temperatures drop during the evening. Bring sunscreen with you during your summer visit since the sun is quite bright here during the warmer months.

Garden City Kansas Weather

The summers are hot and mostly clear in Garden City, while the winters can be quite cold, dry, and usually partly cloudy. It’s windy here almost year-round, and temperatures can vary from as low as 20 degrees in the peak of winter to around 93 degrees in the summertime.

It’s rare for temperatures to dip below six degrees or go over 102 on the coldest and hottest times of the year. Depending on your favorite season, most of our visitors prefer to come between late May and mid-September to experience the best weather.

The hottest time of year here lasts for almost four months and spans from the end of May to the middle of September, with daily average highs above 83 degrees. Mid-July is typically the hottest time, with the average high hovering around 93 degrees.

Evenings are cool in Kansas, even in the summer. Some nights, summer temperatures can dip down to around 66 degrees, so a jacket is always recommended.

For fans of winter, our cold season lasts for around three months from the end of November through February. Our average temperatures are around 53 degrees, but they can dip down to 20 in January.

Precipitation: What You Need to Know

Rain can happen in Garden City any time of year, but most of the time total accumulations only reach around .004 inches. The wetter season runs from the end of April to the beginning of September when there’s a higher chance of rainy days. The peak rainy season is during July for most years.

If you want to visit during the drier season, it’s best to come between September 9 through the end of April. Wet days are less likely here in winter, particularly in January.

Sometimes, you’ll experience a combination of rain and snow in Kansas. It’s impossible to predict what type of precipitation we’ll have, but always bring an umbrella and a raincoat just in case.

Rain alone is the most common form of precipitation in Garden City and can happen between February to December depending on conditions. As for snow, it’s most common between December 1 and February 4 with higher chances at the beginning of January.

There are times of the year when Garden City and parts of Kansas get no rain at all. Typically, this season lasts from mid-November to the beginning of March when conditions are driest.

Sunshine and Humidity

The earliest sunrise in Garden City starts at 6:20 AM on June 13th. The latest sunrise occurs at 8:08 on October 31. We observe Daylight Saving Time in Garden City starting in the spring and ending in the fall.

Our earliest sunsets start at 5:23 PM on December 6 and the latest sunset starts at 9:10 PM on June 27. In between, you’ll experience generally sunny days with very sporadic rain.

When it comes to humidity, most comfort levels are based on the dew point. When the dew point is low, the air feels drier, and higher dew points mean the air is more wet or humid.

Unlike many Southern states, Kansas humidity is fairly low. There are some muggy periods that tend to last between mid-June to the beginning of September. July is our muggiest and most humid month.

If you prefer drier air, November is the best time to visit. This is when muggy and humid conditions are practically nonexistent.
